Elk Fire containment improves after precipitation, jumps 16%

CASPER, Wyo. — Firefighters were able to make progress containing the Elk Fire in northern Wyoming on Thursday, thanks in large part to heavy precipitation in the area.

In one day, containment on the Elk Fire jumped from 28% to 44%, with the wildfire now spanning 96,179 acres, marking no growth beyond the fire’s perimeter as reported the day prior.

Elk Fire public information officer Joseph Wax said the fire’s growth to the south and southwest was slowed by the Rapid Creek, helping crews improve containment…
