Local volunteers celebrate OAKtober by planting trees

For nearly a decade, October has been celebrated throughout Illinois as OAKtober in recognition of the value of native oak trees and oak ecosystems.

Here in Evanston, Natural Habitat Evanston has contributed by planting dozens of oaks and other native trees in parks and school grounds.

Thanks to the efforts of volunteers this month, there are now 30 new trees, including nine oaks, on the grounds of ETHS and still more at Willard Elementary and at Nichols and Haven middle schools. Another planting is scheduled at King Arts on Nov. 6…
