Band director’s pay was not protected by law, Grand Forks Public Schools argues

GRAND FORKS – Dave Christianson’s compensation as a Red River High School band director and pep band director was not part of his teaching contract and not covered by nonrenewal procedures laid out in state law, Grand Forks’ school district asserts in a new legal filing.

Grand Forks Public Schools is arguing the additional pay Christianson received for conducting and supervising several student bands and supervising student choir was not subject to the same rules as his base contract, and thus the district is not obligated to pay him some $12,849 in lost compensation.

Christianson, who has been reassigned to an elementary teaching position,

filed the lawsuit last month…
