After 38 years building Grand Rapids, construction CEO embarks on new path

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — After 38 years, Mike VanGessel is leaving Rockford Construction, the company he co-founded that has overseen scores of projects in West Michigan, including the revitalization of Monroe Center, the JW Marriott, and the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

VanGessel, 60, is passing the reins of the company to Shane Napper, who will take over as CEO after serving as Rockford’s president and chief operating officer.

“I am honored to have built and led this team for nearly 40 years and grateful to so many who mentored me along the way,” he said. “The opportunity to support our Rockford team in achieving their goals, building our clients’ dreams and creating lasting impact in our community has truly been the honor of my life.”…
