Foal of euthanized mare eludes capture, homes will be sought for 98 taken from range

With the end of a local wild horse roundup, the focus will eventually shift to finding people to find homes for those removed from the range, but they won’t include a foal that was with a mare that was hurt in the operation and had to be euthanized.

That foal eluded capture and remains on the range, where it is believed to be old enough to live without the mare, according to the Bureau of Land Management.

The agency worked with a contractor to gather what ultimately turned out to be 140 horses, including 21 foals, on the Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Range. It was working to get the population on the range west of De Beque to within its designated appropriate management level for the range, which is 90 to 150 horses.
