After picking up its first Pioneer Valley League win last week, the Colfax Falcons had a chance to put themselves back in the league title race Friday night when they hosted first place Wheatland. The Falcons entered Friday’s game with a 10-game winning streak over Wheatland dating back to 2011, but this round went to the unbeaten Pirates who escaped with a 27-24 overtime victory to improve to 3-0 in PVL play.
The Pirates struck first midway through the first quarter with a three-yard scoring run from Nolan Bertolucci, but the Falcons evened things up on the first of Noah Smith’s three touchdowns on the night. Both teams traded blows throughout the game, leaving things tied at 21 after regulation.
On the first possession, the Falcons were unable to punch the ball into the end zone and settled for three with kicker Robert Meyer booting a 52-yard field goal that set a new school record and put Colfax on top 24-21. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Wheatland was able to punch it in with a one-yard touchdown run by Isaac Martin to secure the 27-24 victory…
