These 13 Towns Are Out Of Place Under The Big Sky
You never know when you are going to learn something new, and that recently happened to me while learning about another subject, the most rural counties in Montana.
In finding information about these counties, I learned a neat little trivia fact that you can use to impress your friends from out of state.
Same Name, Different Place
There are 13 cities in Montana that share the same name as a county in Montana. That isn’t what makes them unique; no, what makes them unique is that they aren’t in the same county they share their name with.
I could see one or two, but 13 is quite a few cities to be outside of the county they share a name with. Well, there is one that is spelled slightly different; that’s the Choteau and Chouteau County. They were both named after the same person, though, Pierre Chouteau Jr.
Which leads me to another little trivia fact: Pierre Choteau Jr. also had Pierre, South Dakota, the state capital, named after him. He also built Fort Pierre, which they named after him. Then they just went and named the town after him as well. I grew up in South Dakota, and how I never put two and two together on that one is beyond me.
