Soil testing underway for flooded farms

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WJHL) — Area farmers are learning how the sediment left behind from Hurricane Helene’s floodwaters will impact their crops. Sand, silt, and rock are just some of what remains.

Carrol Fender said on his Fender’s Farm that sand and mud in some areas were as much as four feet high. In the last six months, he’s not only been cleaning up and repairing infrastructure but evaluating which, if any, of his crops he can plant. Typically, they’ll have lots of pumpkins, corn for the maze, and sunflowers.

Soil tests already taken by the University of Tennessee Extension Office have not been favorable, but they plan to retest later this week…
