Brookline, Mass.- After falling behind 1-0 in the first 20 minutes, the Elon Phoenix (6-0-1, 1-0-0) led a spirited comeback to take down the Northeastern Huskies (0-6-3, 0-1-0) Sunday afternoon. Gabby Hoschek and Ava Hellner found the two goals the Phoenix needed to grab the three points on the road.
Elon picked up their first three points of the season while Gabby Hoschek scored her third goal of the season. Ava Hellner secured the first goal of her Elon career as well as the game-winning goal. Katie Bisgrove tied her season high in saves with five against the Huskies.
How It Happened
- Rachel Buckle started out with the game’s first shot on goal from a free kick in the sixth minute.
- Northeastern turned on the pressure and fired shots at a rapid rate looking to find the opening goal.
- The Huskies found the opening goal in the 19th minute off a corner kick that bounced around in the box but found the back of the net.
- Northeastern continued to pile on the pressure but Elon would fire back. In the 35th minute Gabby Hoschek struck on the break with a brilliant goal. After a deflected pass, Hoschek struck the ball of the half volley from 25 yards out and buried it in the bottom corner to tie the score.
- Katie Bisgrove continued to find form in net. Mere seconds after the tying goal, Bisgrove and the Phoenix collected a team save to keep the match even.
- Bisgrove made another key save at the beginning of the second half before the Phoenix would give her the lead.
- Kelly Degnan proved to be a sparkplug off the bench and found the ball at her feet pacing down the left wing. Degnan paced into the box and put in a cross that found Ava Hellner who put it in the open goal to give the Phoenix the lead.
- Ashlee Brehio found a shot on goal that could have put the Phoenix up 3-1 but was saved by the goalie.
- The Phoenix went on the defensive for the final 20 minutes and Northeastern could only register one shot as the Phoenix held on to win 2-1.
