This is going to be a busy day across the Gulf States from East Texas to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. December severe weather outbreaks are rare though they have been more frequent in recent years. A developing storm system is heading northeast up the Mississippi Valley. A strong cold front heading east across the Gulf States will set off widespread severe thunderstorms later Saturday and Saturday night.
The Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a moderate risk (50 percent) chance for damaging thunderstorms across the Gulf Coast region. Tornado risk is also quite elevated and SPC is indicating a 15 percent risk of tornadoes inside the moderate risk zone. There is the possibility of EF2 or stronger tornadoes as well as long duration tornadoes which are capeable of producing extensive damage.
