SC auditor resigns after outside audit found $1.8 billion ‘surplus’ was actually an accounting error

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – South Carolina’s State Auditor George Kennedy resigned Thursday after an outside audit found what was thought to be a $1.8 billion surplus in the state’s budget was actually an accounting error.

The report, released last week, was the result of a months-long independent investigation. The accounting error was made about a decade ago when the state converted from an old accounting system to a new one, the report said.
