‘We better be prepared!’: Rep. Gilliard proposes bill for weapon detectors in schools

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — State Rep. Wendell Gilliard has pre-filed a bill requiring weapons detectors in all of South Carolina’s public schools. He’s been trying to get this legislation to the governor’s desk since 2018.

Even without a state mandate, school districts across the Lowcountry have already started using the added safety measure.

High schoolers across the Charleston County School District (CCSD) have all had to walk through a weapons detector at some point. They’re different than a typical metal detector as they’re programmed to only detect weapons of mass casualty, predominantly meaning firearms.
