Man sentenced after $40 debt led to shooting in Asheville

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) – An Asheville man was sentenced to serve an active term at the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections after an unpaid $40 debt led to the shooting of a 68-year-old man last September.

The Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office said Terrence Lamont Burt Jr. was sentenced to serve 65 to 90 months in jail after pleading guilty to felony discharging weapon into occupied dwelling and felony assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to inflict serious injury.

7NEWS previously reported that on September 6, 2023, officers responded to the 40 block of Mount Clare Avenue in Asheville just after 10:45 p.m. following a report of a gun discharge. Once on scene, officers found a 68-year-old man suffering from four gunshot wounds and began treatment until EMS arrived to take the victim to Mission Hospital in critical condition…
