Construction begins on FIU pedestrian bridge years after devastating collapse

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Construction began Sunday on Florida International University’s pedestrian bridge at the site where the previous pedestrian bridge collapsed in 2018, killing six people.

Construction will be done in phases and traffic lanes will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights, and from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

The pedestrian crosswalk on the west side of Southwest Eighth Street and Southwest 109th Avenue will be removed and will no longer be available for use…
