COLUMBIA, S.C. — Health officials and lawmakers are calling on the South Carolina General Assembly to join all but ten states in the nation in expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Health care reform advocates from Cover SC, a coalition that advocates for Medicaid expansion, were joined by two North Carolina lawmakers responsible for passing expansion in call on the state to close the health care coverage gap, where individuals fall who do not make enough to qualify for a government health care subsidy but make too much to qualify for Medicaid in the state right now.

Under the ACA, states can expand Medicaid coverage for all adults below 138% of the federal poverty level. For a family of three, parents earning less than $35,632 would qualify, and all adults, regardless of household size or disability, according to Cover SC…
