Momentum builds for NM bills on cyberbullying, hazing in 2025 legislative session

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) — The New Mexico Department of Justice hopes to pass two bills to protect students from harmful and abusive behavior.

On Friday, KFOX14/CBS4 spoke with Sean Sullivan, a special counsel with the NMDOJ, who said they hope to pass two pieces of legislation in 2025 to address cyberbullying and hazing.

“These are huge problems,” Sullivan said, adding that New Mexico is one of only six states in the U.S. that don’t have laws prohibiting hazing and/or cyberbullying.

The bills come on the heels of a recent NMDOJ report that accused the New Mexico State University of failing to address a “toxic locker room culture” after a hazing scandal rocked NMSU’s Basketball program during the 2022-23 season…
