Lithium battery storage facility proposed for Westfield, officials push back

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – A lithium battery storage facility has been proposed to be built in Westfield, but many in the city are pushing back, from multiple sides. Both Mayor Michael McCabe, as well as city Councilor Dan Allie, told us the risk is not worth the reward.

“There’s no benefit to the people of Westfield. We have our own gas and electric, so this company would be buying for grocery off the grid, whenever it’s at capacity storing, but selling it to Eversource or the grid when prices are high, but it wouldn’t go back into Westfield, so we would bear all the risk and really none of the benefit,” Allie explained.

Texas-based company Jupiter Power has proposed putting a lithium battery storage facility in Westfield but city officials we spoke with said after going over the pros and cons, they believe there are no real benefits to the city…
