HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Navy’s Aiea-Halawa water shaft has been closed as a precaution for more than four years after a 20,000-gallon jet fuel spill at Red Hill.
Since December 2021, the drinking water for Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam has come from the Navy’s Waiawa shaft. But the military wants to reactive the Aiea-Halawa shaft as a backup water source.
On its Safe Waters website, the Navy said, “This resilience will allow the NAHS (Navy Aiea-Halawa Shaft) to supplement and offer a contingency source of potable water should the Waiawa shaft water system be compromised.”…
