UH Hilo Enhances Local Beekeeping and Sustainability with Community-Focused Event

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo recently held an event called ‘Bee-coming Sustainable’ at its agricultural farm in Panaʻewa. The event on April 13 brought together community members, students, and local stakeholders involved in beekeeping and sustainability. It allowed participants in the university’s beehive adoption program to meet beekeeping students and view the beehives they support.

The event highlighted a partnership between UH Hilo and Chef Alan Wong, who have started the ‘Adopt-A-Beehive with Alan Wong’ program. This initiative aims to increase awareness of the challenges facing Hawaiʻi’s honey bee industry and to find local solutions for its sustainability. The program supports student beekeepers’ education and promotes research into effective beehive management.

During the event, the university acknowledged significant contributions and awarded scholarships. Students Beija Ramos-Phair-Langi and Macy Iliahi Park each received $1,000 scholarships for their beekeeping studies.
