Decatur leaders hope to take ownership of 2 historic cemeteries

DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) – Decatur city officials are searching for the descendants of the original owners of two historical cemeteries.

Due to their historical significance, city officials want to take over the Magnolia Sykes and Dancy Garth cemeteries to help maintain them. However, the city cannot work on those cemeteries because they are privately owned.

Local historian Phil Wirey said the two cemeteries are poorly maintained, with grass that’s often not mowed and even vandalism at the Dancy Garth Cemetery…
