In what reflects a rising tide of concern regarding school safety, the Texas Department of Public Safety’s iWatchTexas program reported a notable surge in safety-related alerts during September, as citizens doubled down on monitoring and reporting suspicious activities. The program, which serves as a conduit for Texans to inform authorities about potential dangers, reached a peak with 204 safety related reports last month, according to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
DPS Director Steven McCraw emphasized the role of community vigilance, stating “Looking out for one another – especially in the face of serious threats – is embedded in the spirit of Texas,” his words reflecting an echo of the intrinsic watchfulness that characterizes the local ethos, as the numbers surged from 89 in September of 2023 and from 63 in the same month of 2022, as reported by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
This spike is credited, in part, to increased public awareness of the iWatchTexas initiative and the general principle of vigilance around educational establishments.
