Voter turnout lags behind record-high 2020 in preliminary results

Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab said Kansas may be heading to record-high voter turnout in the 2024 general election, but based on preliminary results, fewer voters participated than in 2020.

Though the total number of voters won’t be known until the official certification on Dec. 2, the number of votes for president is currently at 1,281,425. That’s higher than the 2016 total of 1,225,667 total ballots cast, but nearly 100,000 voters shy of the 2020 record.

That’s despite consistent growth in the number of registered voters in the state. Data provided by the Secretary of State’s Office shows that the number of registered voters growing from 1.75 million in 2016 to more than 2 million in 2024…
