Mississippians give millions to others on GoFundMe in 2024

JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – A recent GoFundMe report shows that Mississippians believe that it is better to give than receive.

Since 2010, GoFundMe has established itself as a renowned crowdfunding website. For many Mississippians, it helped residents financially cope with personal tragedies, support businesses in times of need, and pour into their communities. In 2024, Mississippians have donated more than $9 million to various causes.

These causes inspired Mississippians to give back in huge ways. For instance, Mississippians helped to raise $60,000 for Zach Cooley after a “freak accident” in June. The Quapaw Canoe Company received more than $15,000 to help support it through hard times. Jackson residents raised more than $61,000 to support Clean Up Jackson .

Mississippians often still donate money even after the fundraising goals are met. The largest initiative stemmed from a 2023 fundraiser, in which over 4,600 people raised nearly $25,000 more than the initial $100,000 goal. Overall, residents donated nearly $200,000 to support education, contributed an average donation of $70 to sports fundraisers and $54 for animals .
