BRIELLE — As a teen, Navy Cmdr. J. Gregory “Honcho” Zilai chose to attend the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) on Sandy Hook because of his avid interest in math and science.

Little did the Brielle native know that his choice of a high school would lead to a future when he would take control of a Navy helicopter squadron in Jacksonville, Florida.

According to Zilai, the NJROTC program was a mandatory part of attending MAST, and he really enjoyed it…
