Growing up in Warren in the 50s and 60s was certainly different compared to today. It was not unusual to see a classmate show up with an Ace bandage wrapped around his scalp. Of course the question would arise, “What’s going on with you?”
A single dreaded answer would come out: “RINGWORM.” The patient or victim would have their head shaved and a solution applied 2 or 3 times a day to treat the condition. I always felt sorry for the kid. Of course the question would come up, “How’d you get it?” The Library Theater seats were blamed. Whether doctors knew the truth about the condition is unknown.
Ringworm is not an infestation! It’s not a worm at all! It’s actually a skin condition like psoriasis. It could show up on arms, legs, buttox and the scalp. The scabs it creates form a semi-circle giving the impression of a worm. I haven’t seen a single kid with an Ace bandage on his head for decades…
