OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) – You’re going to want to bundle up over the next 24 hours.
Temperatures have already fallen into the teens in many areas this evening and will continue to fall overnight. Winds are blustery early with gusts over 20 mph at times, but are expected to taper off through the overnight hours. By early Thursday morning, lows are near 10 degrees in southeast Iowa and low to mid teens in northeast Missouri. Wind chills are in the single digits as mostly clear skies this evening become mostly cloudy by Thursday morning. Thursday is a cold day with highs in the mid to upper teens in southeast Iowa and low to mid 20s in northeast Missouri. Mostly cloudy skies in the morning give way to scattered snow showers by mid morning, which last through the early afternoon. By sunset on Thursday, any snow tapers off as skies become mostly clear Thursday night. Lows range from the low teens to high single digits.
Skies are partly to mostly cloudy early on Friday and clouds increase through the day as highs reach the upper 20s and low 30s. By Friday evening, mixed wintry precipitation, including freezing drizzle begins to develop and increases in coverage Friday night. Drive carefully Friday night, and be ready for the possibility of slick roads. As the precipitation continues Friday night, warm air will be working into the area due to southeasterly winds. This turns the frozen precipitation into rain, and this transition gradually works its way north through the overnight hours. By Saturday morning, all of southeast Iowa and northeast Missouri will have switched over to rain. Rain stays with us through the day on Saturday as highs reach the low to mid 40s.
