The godmother of Clematis by Night, and so many other West Palm Beach events, retires

Mary Pinak’s recollection of Clematis by Night’s debut nearly 30 years ago — as reported by The Palm Beach Post a decade ago — goes like this:

“We had one pizza vendor, one keg of beer, and a stage that looked like an 8-foot table. All the bands had to bring their own sound equipment. The library was there, and there was no waterfront breeze. The oak trees there were all freshly planted so there was no real shade. There were like 20 people there.

“We look up and here comes this bus, and all these people started piling out, looking for some restrooms. We were like, ‘We also have some entertainment.’ The first night, at least 300 people got off those buses, stopped to use the restroom, and stayed.”…
