Harris County approves 8% property tax rate increase

For a house appraised at $400,000, the new rate would cost an additional $160 more per year. This increase could be higher if voters approve a flood control tax increase this November.

The Harris County Commissioners Court approved an 8% increase to the county’s property tax rate, well above the normally allowed maximum of 3.5% on Thursday.

The new tax rate was approved by a vote of 4-1 with all four of the court’s Democrats voting for the increase — Republican Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey was the only dissenting vote. The current tax rate for fiscal year (FY) 2024, which began on Oct. 1, 2023, and ends Sept. 30, 2024, is $0.35 per $100 of a property’s appraisal value. When the FY 2025 budget goes into effect on Oct. 1 of this year, the property tax rate will increase to $0.39 per $100.

For perspective, a property valued at $400,000 would have to pay approximately $160 more in county property taxes…
