The South Waterfront pedestrian bridge , a project Knoxville and University of Tennessee leaders have imagined for years, is coming to fruition.
City leaders seized on a last-minute opportunity to reapply for the federal funds needed to build a pedestrian bridge connecting the university campus to underused land across the Tennessee River. The new application paid off, and Knoxville was granted $24.7 million from President Joe Biden’s administration.
“The pedestrian bridge is testament to the power of patience, perseverance and vision,” Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon said. “This bridge itself will be beautiful, and we are committed to creating a holistic and well-designed space.”…
