Comparing this week’s wintry mix to previous storms

AUSTIN (KXAN) — With the potential for a wintry mix for at least part of Central Texas, we thought it would be worth looking back on previous haunting storms to give you some level of comparison.

Snowmageddon 2021

  • Wintry weather period: Feb. 11-18
  • 144 consecutive hours below freezing in Austin
  • 6.4″ snow at Camp Mabry
  • Wind Chill Warning
  • Coldest low temperature in Austin: seven degrees
  • Coldest high temperature in Austin: 25 degrees
  • ERCOT grid near-failure with most losing power

Ice Storm 2023

  • Jan. 30-Feb. 2
  • 66 consecutive hours below freezing in Austin
  • 0.69″ of ice accretion
  • 10.5 million trees damaged
  • Coldest low temperature in Austin: 29 degrees
  • Coldest high temperature in Austin: 32 degrees
  • 1 in 4 people without power in Travis County

Wintry Mix 2025

  • January 8-10
  • Expecting only 1-4 hours at or below freezing at a time in Austin
  • Between 0-0.05″ of ice accretion in Austin
  • Coldest low temperature expected in Austin: 32 degrees
  • Coldest high temperature in Austin: 39 degrees

While what we’re looking at for later this week is a forecast and not yet reality, the initial takeaways are positive. Much less time at or below freezing with warmer daytime highs to promote melting any ice that does accrete on surfaces.

More difficult travel with ice and snow is expected north and northwest.

Stay with the First Warning Weather Team as we continue to analyze this storm and make any adjustments. A trend colder would increase the ice threat whereas a warmer mix would mean more rain and less ice and fewer issues…
