Caleb Furst reemerges as valuable bench big man for Boilers

Zach Edey cast a long shadow at Purdue.

The two-time national player of the year was such a force in the middle that Purdue coach Matt Painter, understandably, wanted to keep him on the floor as often as possible. That created a logjam for minutes in the Boilers frontcourt that affected several players, including Fort Wayne native Caleb Furst.

Furst spent much of his first two seasons with the Boilermakers starting at power forward, but as Edey developed into the player the Boilers had to build their team around, Furst was pushed into the background somewhat in favor of getting first more shooting (Mason Gillis) and then more explosiveness off the dribble (Trey Kaufman-Renn) in the starting lineup around the 7-foot-4 superstar…
