MN weather: Timeline of what to expect with Thursday’s snow

The Brief

  • Minnesota will see our first accumulating snow of the season as a strong clipper rolls in overnight: high impact on the Thursday morning commute.
  • Winter Storm Warning includes the Twin Cities & the entire I-94 corridor on Thursday for a swath of snow; generally in the 3″-5″+ range.
  • Wind whipped accumulating snow will fade late Thursday into travel impacts along with bitterly cold air Friday on into the weekend

(FOX 9) The Twin Cities area is set to see its first significant snowfall this winter as a system moves into the state on Thursday.

Minnesota snow expected

What we know: A strong clipper will move out of the Dakotas and across Minnesota overnight through Thursday evening with a narrow swath of heavy snow along the I-94 corridor including the Twin Cities.

This will be a high impact snow event for the Thursday morning commute that lingers into Thursday afternoon with the largest snowstorm of the season for the Twin Cities so far. There will be a sharp snow gradient across the Twin Cities with our current thinking that the heaviest snow should fall across the north/northeast metro, although the overall track of the storm is still as of yet undefined.
