[1] Violence against the homeless, domestic violence on the rise: APD releases 2024 homicide statistics – Albuquerque police are breaking down the numbers after a record-setting year in which they solved their highest number of homicide cases. According to APD, the city ended 2024 with 96 homicide victims, a decrease from the 99 the year prior and a drop from 2022’s record of 121 victims. In 2024, APD said they solved a total of 79 homicide cases and charged a record 127 suspects. There were 89 murder cases in 2024, and 69% of them were solved. The department also cleared 18 cases from previous years, bringing their solve rate to 89% for the year. They also noted the spike in murder-suicide cases.
[2] New Mexico Department of Justice proposes legislation on hazing and cyberbullying – The New Mexico Department of Justice is asking state lawmakers to pass two bills addressing cyberbullying and hazing during the upcoming session. The proposal comes after an NMDOJ report on the New Mexico State University hazing scandal. It would give offenders a misdemeanor for harmful conduct tied to the recruitment or initiation into a student organization and up to a second-degree felony for hazing resulting in death.
[3] Higher temperatures and winds expected across New Mexico before snow – Snow is lightly falling in the Jemez Mountains to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the San Mateo Mountains, the Gila National Forest, and the Sierra Blanca Range, as well as light precipitation from the Mimbres Valley to the southern Rio Grande Valley, with light rain exiting Southeast New Mexico. Cold air is present, but it’s once again not as cold as the morning before. Temperatures for most, but not all, are below freezing, with persistent westerly winds making it feel a bit colder, but temperatures will rise for one more day for most before our next wintry pattern changes with stronger winds during the transition…
