NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A new national law is taking aim at hazing on college campuses. On Tuesday, President Joe Biden signed a bill requiring colleges and universities to include hazing incidents reported to law enforcement in their annual security report. Schools must also implement hazing awareness training for students.

The new law comes days after the New Mexico Department of Justice released its report on the hazing scandal involving the New Mexico State University men’s basketball team. The report stated that New Mexico is one of only six states in the U.S. without an anti-hazing law, and the New Mexico Department of Justice said that needs to change.
“The reason why is, if you’re from Arizona, and you’re sending your son or daughter to New Mexico State, and they want to join a fraternity or a sorority or athletic team, they should be fully informed about what’s taking place in those fraternities and athletic teams,” said Special Council Sean Sullivan, NMDOJ.
