2024 sees 35% decrease in violent crime in DC

WASHINGTON — As the year closes out, D.C. Police statistics show that crime is down in every category.

D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith oversaw the department for her first full year in 2024 after a particularly violent 2023 that saw a 39% increase in crime from 2022. And overall, the year is ending with violent crime down 35% and property crime down 11% from 2023. But let’s break it down.

Through midnight Tuesday, there have been 190 homicides in D.C. this year. That’s down 31% from 2023, when there were 274 homicides in D.C…
