The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) continues its efforts combating illegal firearms in Washington D.C. with a total of 48 weapons recovered over a one-week period. As reported on the MPD’s website, these recoveries are a part of the department’s strategy to “investigate and recover illegal firearms in Washington D.C. through intelligence-based policing to identify, interdict, and interrupt armed violent offenders within the District.”
The recovered firearms range from handguns to rifles, with multiple arrests accompanying the findings. On December 16, a Glock 19 9mm caliber handgun was seized in the 2800 block of Gainesville Street, Southeast, leading to the arrest of a 31-year-old individual carrying the weapon without a license among other charges. The list, which is not exhaustive, illustrates the variety of firearms obtained by the MPD, from “ghost gun” to shotguns, and the persistent issue of illegal firearms circulation in the area.
MPD’s specialized units and patrol officers are committed to the removal of illegal firearms with the aim of reducing crime and the associated fears in the community.
