Potential bird flu could drive up already high prices, farmers say

PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – Local farmers like Shaffer Carter say that demand for poultry products has remained strong since the conclusion of the COVID-19 pandemic. This strong demand is keeping prices high, and bird flu could cause that price to rise even further.

The current average for a dozen large eggs is $3.20, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Prices can fluctuate, but farmers say that it can sometimes extend beyond supply and demand.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that nearly 101 million suffered from bird flu across 48 states since the beginning of 2022.
