Why are Utah roads so big and so long? The answer lies at the LDS Church History museum

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — If you came to Utah and were looking for an address in the 500 block of East 500 South, would you be confused as to what that meant? If so, you’re probably not alone. Many of Utah’s towns and cities are set up in a grid layout.

The grid system is a street system in which streets get set up in squares or rectangles as opposed to what’s known as a “hub and spoke street system.” A hub and spoke city has roads going into a central hub (usually a downtown area) and is how many older cities (e.g., Paris, France) were built.
