There are several reasons why Halloween has become so popular across the country, whether it is candy, costumes, haunted houses, scary movies, or parties. Those factors can also help determine which cities are the best (and worst) places to spend Halloween. Tennessee is known for doing a lot of things really well, but according to a recent WalletHub study, Halloween is not one of them. Two popular Tennessee cities find themselves at the bottom of the list.

What Makes a City Great for Halloween?

The study compared the 100 biggest cities in America in the following categories that can affect you and your family’s Halloween experience.

  • Trick-or-Treater-Friendliness Rank: When it’s time to hit the pavement and collect candy, you have to take certain things into consideration – like the number of potential trick-or-treat stops, the walking situation, crime rates, and traffic safety.
  • Halloween Fun Rank: This category encompasses all of the various Fall activities, including the number of haunted houses, pumpkin patches, farms, movie theaters, bars, amusement parks, and more.
  • Halloween Weather Rank: You’ve got to consider what Mother Nature has planned for you on All Hallow’s Eve.

Nashville is probably Tennessee’s most popular city, especially when it comes to things like music, food, and shopping. Nashville is NOT, however, a good place to go for Halloween. Music City is ranked 98th (out of 100) on the list of the best (and worst) cities for Halloween. But the news gets worse for Tennessee…

Memphis, TN seems to find itself near the bottom of many “best of” types of lists, including this one. The home of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has the unfortunate distinction of being ranked dead last, 100th, on the list of places to go for Halloween.

Why Are These TN Cities So Low on the List?

Tennesseeans may feel personally attacked by these results, but that’s not the case. It all comes down to the data in the categories mentioned above…

  • Trick-or-Treater-Friendliness Rank: This is the category that was the proverbial nail in the coffin for Tennessee. Memphis ranked 100th, and Nashville ranked 94th.
  • Halloween Fun Rank: Not as bad as the friendliness rank, but not great either. Memphis ranked 66th, and Nashville ranked 70th.
  • Halloween Weather Rank: This category was the one saving grace for Tennessee. Memphis ranked 21st, and Nashville ranked 23rd.
