When Sofia Hernandez-Williams of Holden plays the cello there is a mellowness and maturity to the sound of the music that belies her age — even if she’s just playing while a photographer takes pictures of her at the end of a recent interview at the Joy of Music Program in Worcester.
Sofia, 11, is in the news as she will be the youngest competitor when she performs in the semi-finals of the junior division (ages 17 and under) at the prestigious national Sphinx Competition scheduled to be held Jan. 23 to 25 at the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center in Detroit.
She has also been increasingly seen recently locally performing at concerts, sometimes as the guest cello soloist.
‘What I’ve always been aiming for’
Sofia already has a definite career aim in mind. She told her parents early on that she wanted to be a cello soloist. “That’s what I’ve always been aiming for — to be a professional cellist,” she said with enthusiasm during an interview with the Telegram & Gazette…
