County administrator won’t say if he read scathing DOJ report into Richland jail

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – The Richland County Administrator did not answer when asked whether he read a report about the county jail from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center is violating detainees’ federally protected civil rights by turning a blind eye to “extreme violence,” gang activity, and contraband, the DOJ found after more than a year of investigating the facility.

The findings report highlights how the DOJ says Richland County fails to protect inmates from physical assaults and sexual assaults, which points to “severe and systemic lapses in security operations at the jail.”…
