The hopes of a “Town Sweep” ended in heartbreaking fashion Saturday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium at Willie Jeffries Field.
A 27-yard field goal by Northwestern’s Matthew Fish as time expired sent Irmo to a 34-31 defeat in the Class 5A Division II final. The loss denied the Yellow Jackets an opportunity to claim its first state title since 1980. It also came 24 hours after rival Dutch Fork defeated Summerville 35-21 in the Class 5A Division I title game. Shrine Bowl quarterback and Virginia Tech signee A.J. Brand led Irmo with 319 total yards and four touchdowns. Donovan Murph caught two touchdowns and had eight receptions for 123 yards.
For all their efforts, the Yellow Jackets could not slow down fellow Shrine Bowl quarterback Finley Polk. The Gardner-Webb signee completed 33-39 passes for 427 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receivers Kameron Vance, who had 11 catches for 164 yards, and TaDarrian Knox each had two touchdowns. Jayden Nichols had a team-high 13 receptions for 150 yards.
