Syracuse street named in honor of Mary Nelson, founder of backpack giveaway, youth center

Syracuse, N.Y. — Mary Nelson arrived at the intersection of South Salina Street and Wood Avenue riding in a fire truck Saturday morning.

As the truck pulled up and Nelson stepped out, one person in the crowd of about 50 who gathered to honor her as the city named a street after her called out “just like Santa Claus!”

But to be frank, Nelson has Santa beat. Her generosity is more than just one day a year…
