California commission pushes through deeply unpopular bridge toll hike, ignoring public opposition

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – The Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA) has approved a toll increase for seven state-owned bridges, beginning January 1, 2026. FasTrak users with two-axle vehicles will pay $8.50 initially, with annual hikes reaching $10.50 by 2030. Mail-in tolls will rise to $11.50 by the same year.

Carpool policies will also change in 2026, requiring three occupants for half-price tolls during peak hours. Two-person carpools can use carpool lanes on all bridges except the Bay Bridge but won’t receive discounts.
