Man arrested for $25,000 Walmart break-in was caught ‘eating and drinking items off shelves’

Police arrested Rodolpho Mendiola, 53, a California man they say caused $25,000 of damage after breaking into a Santa Fe Walmart on Christmas Eve as he wandered the store ‘eating and drinking’ off the shelves and defecating in several aisles.

Santa Fe police reported that Mendiola, a homeless man , broke into a Walmart on Herrera Drive, just off Cerrillos Road on Christmas Eve. Mendiola is reportedly battling addiction and mental illness and has previously been to rehab – though he says he drank a bottle at the store and ‘knew’ he would get arrested.

He allegedly hid in the clothing section as the store closed and spent the night filling shopping carts with items he didn’t ‘plan to pay for.’

Police stated that he also damaged multiple electronics and display cases. This incident wasn’t his first altercation with the law. According to a Walmart Asset Protection manager, Mendiola had previously infiltrated the same store on two other occasions…
