Up close look at Interstate 70 rock blast with 4,500 pounds of explosives

FLOYD HILL, Colo. (KDVR) — For the first time, FOX31 got an up-close look at the rock blasting operations happening on Interstate 70.

The I-70 Floyd Hill Project will improve eight miles of the interstate in the mountain corridor to make it safer and faster to navigate. However, accomplishing these goals requires intermittent daily closures for rock-blasting explosions.

From the lunchtime I-70 traffic flow, to complete silence on one of Colorado’s busiest interstates Tuesday, FOX31 had cameras rolling as crews set off a rock blasting operation above westbound I-70 between the Hidden Valley interchange and the Veterans Memorial Tunnels near Idaho Springs.

“Where we’re blasting today is where the westbound viaduct, one of ten bridges that are going to be constructed on the project, will actually land,” project manager Matt Hogan said…
