The effect cold temperatures have on your home and car

SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – “When we see temperatures in the 20s and teens, it can really cause issues with your house and with your car,” said AAA Texas spokesperson, Daniel Armbruster.

Winter isn’t just snow and ice, but extremely cold temperatures. Armbruster said with homes, frozen and busted pipes are a common and expensive issue when the weather cools. “We know here at AAA insurance that the average frozen pipe claim can cost more than $11,000,” he said. To protect your pipes, “It’s important to let your faucets drip a little bit. Take those garden hoses off and disconnect them and then cover your outside faucets.”

When it comes to roadside emergencies in the cold, “flat tires and dead batteries are the things we see most common this time of year,” said Armbruster. He said the cold causes your tires to lose pressure over time. “Driving on under-inflated tires can be very dangerous. It can cause a blowout, and certainly you need good, healthy tires to drive on any type of wet surface.”…
