Scott County Inmates help nonprofit raise $91K for local cancer patients

SCOTTSBURG, Ind. — Inmates in the Scott County Jail are putting a newfound talent to good use.

Since the start of the year, the female inmates at the jail have learned to crochet items like hats, scarves, and blankets. Officer Kathy Burge started the program in hopes to give the inmates a productive outlet to help them relax. It ended it doing even more than that.

“Some of them throw the bag back and say, ‘I can’t do it.’ Then a few days later they ask for it back. So I kind of use that in their rehab, too. I’m like, ‘If you can put that much determination into doing this and learning this, then you can put that much determination into your recovery,'” Burge said…
