Weeks from competition, Anton show goats stolen from FFA barn

ANTON, Texas — Students at Anton ISD are devastated after nearly all their show goats were stolen from the FFA barn, just weeks before a competition.

Brian Reed who has been teaching agriculture at Anton ISD for only a year, has already seen a lot of heartbreak in the program.

On Tuesday, as teachers prepared to welcome students back on Wednesday, Reed arrived early to make sure the barns were in order. He then noticed the fence was cut into and all the gates open with one goat running around. The goat left behind had avoided being captured, likely causing the thieves to give up to avoid being caught, Reed said. He suspects the stolen goats will be sold, a sad reality faced in the agriculture industry.

“I think it’s just somebody that’s just evil,” Reed said. “To steal animals, first of all, but to steal animals from kids? That’s just unconscionable.”

This is not the first setback for the Anton FFA team. In October, their goats were killed by dogs. With the help of community donations, new goats were purchased but now, the team faces another heartbreak…
