Ohio State Highway Patrol talks about safe driving on winter roads

LIMA, OH (WLIO) – There’s been an increase in weather-related accidents with last week’s snowfall.

The Lima Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol handled 18 crashes alone when the snow came in on Friday. Most of the accidents involved following too close behind the car in front and unsafe speeds on the snowy roads. Now allowing enough space and time for them to slow down before colliding into the rear of the car ahead. They have plenty of tips to help people stay safe in those conditions.

“I’d say the two biggest things you can do is if you don’t have to be on the roadway, then stay home. The second biggest thing is, if you do have to go out, we ask that you plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to get to wherever you’re going. And decrease your speed and following distance,” says Sgt. Chad Recker with the Ohio State Highway Patrol Lima Post.

They also encourage people to keep an emergency kit in their vehicle along with plenty of fuel…
